The Man Behind Saint Valentine’s DayFernando Queirós
We all enjoy celebrating Saint Valentines Day. Chocolate, roses, champagne and a lot of Al Green (if done correctly at least).
It’s a day to share with our most significant other. A day to give thanks to the people that makes our days a little better, no matter how bad they were. And even though it is an excellent concept, most people don’t know the story behind the holiday.
St. Valentine was a priest “He was a Roman Priest at a time when there was an emperor called Claudius who persecuted the church at that particular time,” Father O’Gara explains. ” He also had an edict that prohibited the marriage of young people. This was based on the hypothesis that unmarried soldiers fought better than married soldiers because married soldiers might be afraid of what might happen to them or their wives or families if they died.”
Following this prohibition, Father Valentine, against Claudius will realizing how unfair this law was, married Christian couples in secrecy just the same.
The father was caught, tortured and killed by the Roman soldiers. He died, so that loved could prevail. So we can share part of that love with the people that matter the most to us.
Saint valentines story reminds us that there are things far beyond us. That there are things in life more important than life itself. That love should be held at the highest consideration.
This valentine’s day lets remember the reason why we share a gift with someone, let’s make love reign!
